Analyst Predictions for Mobile World Congress 2012

Mobile-World-Congress-2012

With Mobile World Congress 2012 just around the corner, analysts on the judging panel of this year’s GSMA Global Mobile Awards have predicted the hot topics and themes to come from Barcelona. According to their predictions, here are just a few of the highlights that conference attendees – and the mobile industry at large – can expect: Thin is still in. Small size remains the dominant factor in hardware design, from handsets to tablets and ultrabooks. Screens converge. Apple, Samsung, Nokia and other vendors are working to integrate smart phone, tablet and TV screens – and ultimately draw users into their ecosystems. HTML5 emerges. For media-oriented content, HTML5 holds much promise and raises few questions [...]

Hungry Applications: Dealing with the 4G/LTE Data Deluge

4g-applications

During a recent RCR Wireless event, I sat on a panel that discussed the future of 4G/LTE. In particular, we looked at how the devices coming online will impact 4G/LTE networks and infrastructure. We also looked at how operators can mitigate that impact. When it comes to device impact on 4G/LTE infrastructure, there’s really no surprise. If nothing else, the sheer volume of smartphone and other device traffic is going to drive wireless operators to build out their 4G/LTE capacity. Bandwidth-hungry applications such as streaming video, media sharing, voice over LTE, messaging, mobile payments and others are going to strain operator networks, if they’re not strained already. Growth in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications will only compound [...]

Demand for Vertical Real Estate Drives Smart Site Solutions

networ-deployment

The U.S. housing market may still be on “life support,” as a recent Forbes article maintains, but what about the real estate market that wireless carriers really care about  – the vertical real estate market? In contrast to plummeting demand in housing, demand for equipment space on towers is soaring, driven in large part by smart phone users demanding higher-speed access to bandwidth-intensive mobile applications. With tower space at a premium, carriers are starting to get smart and adopt smart site solutions for their network design and vertical real estate challenges. So what exactly is the problem that carriers face on towers? Too much equipment vying for too little space. And with the rollouts of [...]
